Hello Goan Konkani Wikipedians!

Apologies as this message is not in your native language, Please help translate to your language.

The WMF Language team wants to make MinT the default machine translation support in Goan Konkani Wikipedia Content Translation. MinT uses the IndicTrans2 machine translation model, which recently has a new version.

Our proposal to set MinT as the default machine translation service in this Wikipedia will expose contributors to open source service by default and allow them to switch to other services if they prefer those services. Contributors can decide to switch to another translation service that is not default if they prefer the service, which will be helpful in analysing user preferences in the future.

The WMF Language team is requesting feedback from members of this community in this thread if making the MinT the default translation service is okay in Goan Konkani Wikipedia. If there are no objections to the above proposal. In that case, MinT will become the default machine translation in this Wikipedia by the end of January 2024.

Thank you for your feedback.

On behalf of the WMF Language team.

Hello @UOzurumba (WMF), thanks for your message. When I use the Content Translation tool, there is already machine translation available. I assumed that this was coming from MinT. If so, then what exactly is changing?

UOzurumba (WMF) (चर्चायोगदान)

Hello The Discoverer,

The MinT translation in gomwiki is set as optional at the moment. Suppose I have not deliberately chosen MinT from the initial translation panel. In that case, I will have the default machine translation service, currently Google Translation, when I start translating. But, If we change the default machine translation to MinT, anybody starting a translation in gomwiki will automatically use the MinT translation support unless the person goes to the initial translation panel to choose another translation.

So, changing the default translation service from Google to MinT will expose the MinT more in Gomwiki because it will become the automatic translation used unless the person translating an article changes it to another translation service.

I hope the above explains what we mean by making MinT the default translation. Please let me know if you have another question.

Thank you!

The Discoverer (चर्चायोगदान)

It seems to me, that in order to decide which should be the default, we should first compare the quality of the automatic translation output that we get from Google Translate and MinT. How can I change my machine translation service in order to evaluate Google Translate and MinT?

UOzurumba (WMF) (चर्चायोगदान)

Hello The Discoverer,

I have included screenshots illustrating how to change the default initial machine translation. You can switch from one machine translation to another as often as possible.

Let me know if this illustration helps.

Thanks!

UOzurumba (WMF) (चर्चायोगदान)

Hello The Discoverer,

The WMF Language team will make MinT the default machine translation in your Wiki by February 6, 2024. Please let me know in this thread before then if you have any objections to having MinT as the default machine translation in Goan Wikipedia.

Thank you so much for your feedback so far.

The Discoverer (चर्चायोगदान)

Hello @UOzurumba (WMF), thanks for you explanation of how to switch the translator, it was helpful.

I tested using both, Google Translate and MinT for a variety of text passages, and both were at a similar level. I'm sorry to say that both are unsatisfactory, because somehow they tend to incorporate significant Marathi vocabulary. It's difficult to say that one holds the edge over the other. So for me, in terms of quality, it doesn't make a huge difference which one is the default. In such a situation, are there any advantages of changing the default from Google Translate to MinT?

UOzurumba (WMF) (चर्चायोगदान)

Thank you, @The Discoverer, for your feedback.

Some of the benefits are:

  • Contributors will contribute to and use open-source initiatives instead of commercial/for-profit support.
  • The engineers will regularly update the translation models in MinT once available since MinT is hosted in the WMF infrastructure.

There are other benefits, but these are the main ones from the users' point of view.

The Discoverer (चर्चायोगदान)

What about the possibility of the Konkani Wikipedia community improving the machine translation model? Will we have to separately get in touch with IndicTrans2?

UOzurumba (WMF) (चर्चायोगदान)

Hello @The Discoverer,

Sorry, I missed answering your question. If your community wants to improve the IndicTrans2 model, you have to contact them separately.

Please confirm your standpoint on having the MinT as default in your wiki. Should the WMF Language team make it default or leave Google as default? Thank you so much for your prompt feedback.

Best regards

The Discoverer (चर्चायोगदान)

As I mentioned earlier, I do not see a difference in the quality of the translation. We can make MinT as default, simply because, most people are aware about the existence of Google Translate, and use it off-Wiki, but they are unaware of the existence of MinT.

Hello all,

I am reaching out to you today to remind you that the voting period for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) charter will close on 2 February 2024. Community members may cast their vote and provide comments about the charter via SecurePoll. Those of you who voiced your opinions during the development of the UCoC Enforcement Guidelines will find this process familiar.

The current version of the U4C charter is on Meta-wiki with translations available.

Read the charter, go vote and share this note with others in your community. I can confidently say the U4C Building Committee looks forward to your participation.

In 2016, the Konkani Wikipedia made Structured Discussions (then known as Flow), the default content model for all discussion pages. The main reason was that our users were finding it difficult to learn the syntax needed to format discussions properly.

Over the past 7 years, Structured Discussions has fallen out of favour due to various reasons, and the code is currently unmaintained, and the extension will eventually be deprecated. Due to this, our request to install Structured Discussions in the Konkani Wiktionary was declined.

In the meanwhile, a feature called Discussion Tools has been developed, which provides many of the functionalities of Structured Discussions that are relevant to our wiki: automatic formatting of discussions, and being able to reply without leaving the page, with a single click.

As a consequence of these developments, it seems that we have to launch the process to switch back from Structured Discussions to using Discussion Tools on normal talk pages. The advantages of this would be:

  • Common discussion system on the Konkani Wikipedia and WIktionary.
  • Searching posts and moving of topics from one page to another is possible in wikitext, but not in Structured Discussions.
  • Discussion Tools is maintained by the developers, but going forward, there will be less and less support for Structured Discussions

A disadvantage that I perceive is that we will have to implement a bot to automatically archive topics when discussion pages get too long.

My proposal is, in the immediate term, to take the following steps:

  • Archive this current community discussion page 'Tintto' and start a fresh page in wikitext.
  • Turn on Topic Containers for pages that have the magic word NEWSECTIONLINK in the Konkani Wikipedia, so that the Tintto will have Topic Containers.

Please reply with your opinions, comments, support or objections below.
