        • The context is that there is a script-controversy raging in Goa (particularly over whether Devanagari or Roman script is better for the Konkani language). In such a situation, I would suggest that we promote a to-each-his-own approach. Let anyone use whatever script they are comfortable with. Wikipedia has enough space for all! In any case, there is a considerable amount of overlap between the different scripts. Let people show their support by promoting the script of their choice (rather than arguing against other scripts). I'm sure we could keep everyone on board. Of course, this could pose some challenges for editing etc, specially among those not familiar with the different scripts. (My own fluency in any script is subject to question, but I see myself as playing a kind of catalyst role here.) As and when Wikipedia-Kok grows into a bigger project, we could think of bifurcating it among the different scripts it uses. Any user who wants to transliterate it to any other script (Devnagiri, Kannada, Arabic, Malayalam should create another article and suffix the title with a code representing the script. Anyone who wants to can translate an article to his favourite dialect can do so with the codition that the contents must match exactly. Any change in the primary article should be propogated to others. Minor differences such as dialectical vocabulary or gramar differences can be changed as long as it is understandable to the majority using the particular script. BUt no one should be allowed to vary the content. A group of moderators who are well versed in two or more scripts should regularly check changes and ensure that reansliterations of important articles are carried out.

Deepakbab, you're right. I didn't intend to bring in a regional divide! Let's try and be inclusive here, rather than exlusive. Specially because cyberspace has more than enough space to include everyone! There's abundance here. (At least of space, even if not of volunteers... yet.)
To the others who can't follow this, Deepak is basically saying that a Konkani Wikipedia page should not be restricted to the geographical region of Goa alone, since Konkani is spoken beyond Goa too (and perhaps in larger numbers!) This was unintentional. Wp/kok should try to cater to all the diversity that exists in Konkani. It's nice to see the participation of Sangeetadiwar from Goa University too --Fredericknoronha 09:59, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Sorry about that Sir.Please forgive me. :-)I hope you don't take it as an insult ,that was not my intension.In fact I often asked myself if it was neccesary for me to have put that at all , but since Wikipedia generally doesn't allow deletion of talk pages I didn't remove it. I should have thought about it before writing it in the first place.
Perhaps you can blame it on the "Kaam naatlo aachari Kulhad haanktaa" . When I first came to know about Konkani Wikiedia I was overjoyed but was a bit pissed-off because I thought it was Goa-Centric(although it was only 3-4 articles). That was a serious error of judgment on my part and again I apologize for that.
I didn't realize that you had taken so much trouble to get this Wikipedia started and to put those articles in the first place and that any person will naturally start with the articles that interest him the most. That was ungrateful of me and again I apologize to you for it.
In retrospect I am striking out some of my comments.

Getting Rid of the big bad Move box[बदल]

Ok! here's the idea ...

all pages have to be in the "Wp/kok/" subdirectory

Here's how to do it for existing articles: 1. Click on a link and go to the page.(eg Goem)

2. Click Move tab on the top of the Page

In the move to box type "Wp/kon/Goem"

Click the Move button

3. Click the edit tab on the top of the page.

Remove the {{Move-page}} tag and save.

4. Go to the parent page (that is the page from which you clicked the link)

Edit this page

Now modify the link from [[Goem]] to [[Wp/kok/Goem|Goem]] .

Save

THis should work! :-)

Translation and Transliteration[बदल]

Nobody has come on board yet :-( , but let us discuss a broad scheme of a policies here. It would be great if we could make it a 3-script Wikipedia, but htere are problems which need to be discussed and sorted out.

As I said the first job is that of transilteration. I have already transliterated sections of the Goem page into Devanagari and Kannada . But it is more for demonstative purposes than a final transliteration. I was thinking in the following lines:

The Romi transliteration should be such a fashion that it is understandable to most people who use the Roman Script ,namely the Catholics of Goa.

The Devanagiri transliteartion , similarly should be understandabel to most Konkanis who used Devanagari on a daily basis, namely, the Malwanis of Maharashtra and Hindus of Goa.

However Kannada script provides an interesting obstacle. Although most widely used in Karnataka, it covers tow major dialects which have very different grammar and vocabularies: The GSB dialect (Amchigle) and the Monglurgaar Kristao Dailect. It may not be possible to put a single Kannada Script article which is understandable to both!

Transliteration Rules[बदल]

Let the welcome page and items in the Roman script be in the wp/kok/ sub directory. ALl article in other scripts can be in subdirectories like this:

  • wp/kok/ roman script articles:
  • wp/kok/dn/ devanagiri script articles
  • wp/kok/kd/ Kannada script articles
  • wp/kok/ml/ malayalam script articles
  • wp/kok/ab/ arabic script articles

Keep the article name in the same script that it is written in For instance I have started an article in devanagiri regarding Konkani language as कोंकणी भास So while creating the article I have to type: wp/kok/dn/कोंकणी भास

If you create any article from the welcome page (by clicking on it)it will be created in a root directory. AS SOON AS YOU CREATE the new article, click on move and move it to the apropriated subdirectory, or else it will be treated as orphaned by sysadmins and marked up for deletion.

I suggest that the first thing you do while creating an article is to save the article name(along with subdir) in a text file on your PC. Also save its HTTP URL.This will save you trouble later, incase the article is "lost".

Once you have the article or stub ready add a link in the welocme page in the appropriate section. For instance For the कोंकणी भास page the entry will be [[dn/कोंकणी भास|कोंकणी भास]] in the devanagari section.

If you have created an original article in any other script (other than Romi or Devanagiri) then create a stub article in eithe romi or devanagiri and redirect to that article or paste the url in the artciel and add a "please transiterate this article from xyz script". Someone else will take care of the rest.

Typing in Devanagari[बदल]

Normally a person who wishes to type in any Indian Script will have to learn the "Inscript keyboard Layout" . To tell it in short just like an English keyboard is arranged in "QWERTY....." form similarly Indian characters are rearranged on to the keyboard to make it easy to use. To use it you have to practice it a lot and (if you can get it) paste stickers on all keys of a Standard US keyboard to display. I found it rather difficult, could not get the stickers and gave up quickly.

In a nutshell : Inscript keyoard takes time and effort to learn and use.

The alternative? There are many but let me advertise for Baraha IME. If you are used to typing any Indian language using Roman letters on an English keyboard This tool is the EASIEST to pick and use. You can get started on it within 15 minutes.

For example: Dev boro dees deum. to type it using baraha IME just type: dev boro dIs diuM which gives: देव बोरो दीस दिउं. Even typing: dev boro dees diuM gives the same result!. It is very flexible and intuitive to use.

Best of all :

  • IT IS FREE! its creator has released it for free , but if you wish to pay,he has asked for a donation to is favourite Kannada organization.
  • NO TUTORIAL NEEDED! just read the manual(it takes just 15 min!) and get started . you will make a few mistakes at first but improve rapidly.
  • transliteration from one Indic script to another is in three easy steps!

(Note: Mistakes, if any, are my own, not the software's.)

  • It is made for full compatibility with Unicode and works very well with browsers!Excellent! even better than its sister product Baraha Editor.

WOW! This is serious, after all![बदल]

The first time I heard of the project for a Wikipedia in Konkani, I dismissed it summarily. "Konkani, a developing language, trying for a Wikipedia of its own?? What next?" I said.

Well, today I came by this page almost by accident. And what do I see? A few Konkani Wikipedia believers who are bent on making this dream a reality. Kudos to those whom I will call the KW Fathers -- Frederick Noronha and Deepak D'Souza -- for working to, first and foremost, bring together Konkani people from different regions, cultures, scripts and parlances into this new experiment. I am already fascinated by what I expect to see here as time goes by: a tasty, very tasty spread of Konkani language specimens of the most varied kinds; a veritable gourmet meal for any one who relishes the linguistic wealth that is out there to be enriched with, rather than engage in meaningless bickerings over which script or parlance is better than the other.

Fare forward, Konkani Wikipedia!

No JLP, we are not experts, we are learners too! Let me tell you that there was a time when I couldn't even speak in "amchi maibhaas". Even now I often fumble while speaking or end up substituting words and phrases with English, Hindi and Marathi equivalents. Some here may be experts but the majority are not!
No one will preserve our heritage for us. It is given to us , not to keep , but to pass it to future generations or loose it for ever.
Wikipedia works under the GNU Free Documentation license which means that no user owns his work. Any persons work is subject to change/improvement/criticism. Once you put an article on you cannot prevent someone else from reverting or changing it(as long as he/she has a valid reason!) . Anyone can copy Wikipedia content and use it freely as his own under GNU FDL.
All you need to do to join in is this : 1)Have a love for Konkani and 2)Understand and respect Wikipedia Policies.

Right now Konkani Wikipedia does not have a specified set of policies but apply all the rules and guidlines from the English Wikipedia

Getting members over the net[बदल]

I have been trying to contact other Konkani Wikipedians on the English Wikipedia and I have had very little success, except one notable exception. Equinox despite being able to spare much time has volunteered and rapidly created 5-6 articles.

I am a user of orkut and it has quite a few Konkani usergroups with an audience of roughly 5000-10000 Konkanis. I will take up the task of enticing members to join in there. Similarly someone should take up one such network each --Deepak D'Souza (talk • contribs) 13:36, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

What you can do to help the Konkani Wikipedia:

  • Translate articles of relevance to Goa, and to generally building the body of knowledge in Konkani. There are tonnes of copyright-free articles which you can translate into Konkani at http://en.wikipedia.org This is specially suited for people with linguistic and translation skills (whatever script).
  • Play around with the Wikipedia and see how it works. It's not complex. The starting point is to create a login for yourself. Then, everything follows. This is specially suited for tech people. But don't believe it's a complicated tech job!
  • Build awareness about the attempt to build the Konkani Wikipedia, and tell others about it. It will only work if there is enough "critical mass" and interest around it.
  • Above all, promote the language of your choice (any script!) using this tool of the 21st century. It's a powerful tool, so let's make use of it.

The best thing here is: you can promote any script you want via the Konkani Wikipedia. Romi, Devanagari, Kannada (and I guess even Malayalam or Perso-Arabic). So instead of clashing swords, let's sharpen our pens, and increase the amount of sharable Konkani information in cyberspace. The Wikipedia (for a number of reasons) is a great place to do it. And all this knowledge becomes sharable.

Konkani sayings[बदल]

Sources for sharable information[बदल]

We need to find sources where we could get sharable and copyright-unencumbered information that can be translated into Konkani. Of course, one prime source is the English-language Wikipedia Wikipedia-English. But what we take from there needs to be relevant to the reader of Konkani (accuracy, etc, are other issues... but these can be fixed or worked on... given enough eyeballs).

And then, just do a search for "Goa" or "Konkani" or related keywords, using the Wikipedia search-box at the bottom-left of every Wikipedia page.

if one wants to write konkani the way he speaks even roman script requires a few modifications/adaptations for sounds like 'cha' as in charm, 'sha' as sheep, 'tha' as theme, 'dha' as in them, some vowels and most used nasal sound between'n & m'. to solve this problem i've tried adapting international phonetic alphabet to indian alphabet. if one logs in for konkani script in 'google' you will find it. --falobo [Transferred here by FN]

This is the reply I have posted on Equinox/'s talk page:

What happens is this : you click on edit in right hand column, add the link and when you previw it you get a lot of code and garbled text! right?? Well that is perfectly normal. It happens because the code is linked to the left hand side and since the brackets are not closed(temporarlily, during the preview), the formating is garbled., Once you save it it should come back to normal. Script Issues[बदल]

Firstly, let me announce the good news. We are moving towards a full fledged wiki! Now the bad news: Multiple scripts will cause a problem and hence we will have to stick to one script. I am trying to sort the issue out; but as per the communication I have received from admins so far , it seems it will be best to go by one script which means Devanagari. Ill see if there is some way to salvage the existing work, but for those of you who contribute in the Roman script or Kannada script I guess we will have to transliterate to Devanagari and delete the existing articles. The issue is more than just scripts and transliteration. There are different dialects being used, each different from the other in some way. Let's not be seen as doing injustice to the other scripts used for Konkani. Maybe we could commit to setting up different Wikipedias for the different Konkani scripts/dialects, and see how these take off over time. --Fredericknoronha 10:32, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Two scripts are doable, see e.g. Serbian Wikipedia where they have a conversion script between Cyrillic and Latin. If you click on the right-most tab, it will be in Latin; there are not two Main Pages, it's done by the conversion script (see here for the code). That could be made for Konkani, e.g. between Devangari and Latin. If you want to create a conversion script, it's best to contact betawiki:User:Nike. Note that it can only be activated when the Konkani Wikipedia is created. SPQRobin 10:57, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
About the dialects I guess we have verry little choice but to allow the users to edit in the dialect they feel comfortable with, at least for now. Once the Wikipedia is in place we can (and I guess we will have to) move to the common dialect. With regard to the script issue I am a bit dissapointed that a Devanagari/Latin combine will leave out the Kannada script , which has the largest base(and to which I belong :-)). But then it doesnt really create a problem, I can easily build a Devanagiri to Kannada transliterator(specific to Konkani). That will be eassier than a Kannada<->Latin or Devanagari<->Latin translator as the orthographies vary vastly. Besides there are no Kannada script contributors at present(except me). Devanagari is official , so it has ot be there. The Roman script has an additional advantage that we can reach out to a large Konkani population that lives outside India(my guess is neary 40%) and is uuntrained in both Devanagari and Kannada scripts. If we believe in diversity and the right of all languages/scripts/dialects to continue existing, then there is a strong case for continuing in all languages. We can point out to the Wikipedia admins that it is unfair that technology should decide the future of our language. A limitation brought on by the software used to run the Wikipedia should not be the deciding factor. We can surely make some adjustment. The Serbian case, of Cyrilic and Latin characters, has already been pointed out. Also, I do not feel that the Kannada script should be sacrificed either. Let's push for some technical solution that allows for as many scripts as needed (given the ground-level reality that would be a maximum of five, maybe four, most probably three). Whatever it is, we should be openminded to the sensitivities of all, rather than just define the issue in a manner that is acceptable to us. Three scrips are possible, see for example kk:, they just ask more work (I think so). The main point is that we need to write a Wikipedia in one script: we need to choose the most used or most important script to be used in Konkani Wikipedia. Hi SPQRobin and others -- please try to understand the issue and all its dimensions, as it would otherwise be unfair to shut out dialects and scripts from the Wikipedia, merely because "all other languages work in this manner" (to assume what the argument would be). There is no such thing as a "main" script for Konkani, specially since we are trying to be inclusivist here. The 'official' script used for Konkani in Goa is the Devanagari script, following a decision taken in 1987 after a bitter language controversy. Till date, the number of people reading and writing in the Roman script is probably larger than that of Devanagari and there is some contestations between the two camps (much like the Cyrillic-Latin debate cited above in the Serbian case). It might be also correct to say that the number of Kannada script users exceeds both Devanagari and Roman users; but it continues to be a minority language in the region where it is spoken (Karnataka). In addition, each script is linked to one or the other dialect, meaning that writings from one script cannot simply be software-converted into another script. If that was done, they would probably simply become incomprehensible to the readers of the other script. Given the historical realities, the Wikipedia needs to take into account the local realities and help to create some tech solution for the complexities here. It is unfair to expect the language to be reshaped by what technology currently allows it to do. Alternatively, more than one Konkani wikipedia could be set up, to ensure nobody feels excluded. If two scripts can be accomodated, then a Devangari/Roman two-in-one Wikipedia could function side-by-side. (This would make sense because the two scripts/dialects are closer, both geographically and in terms of being able to comprehend each other.) The Kannada script Wikipedia could be set up separately, but we must work to ensure that Kannada-script Konkani writers and readers don't feel let down by our decision. Also, it would be unfair to make them go through the entire incubation process all over again, considering that they have been party to this initiative from the early days. I think you are assuming that everything is possible. Unfortunately it's not. We have two obstacles:
1) The Langcom decides whether a test wiki here can get its own wiki. In the past, you just had to ask it and you got a Wikipedia. Now you're lucky when you have passed all requirements and have a Wikipedia. Even the option of two Wikipedias for the same language but in another script is not possible.
2) The technical side. Only a conversion script is possible. We'll have to accept this, the only alternative is no Wikipedia.

I have been looking at the rules and it looks like we will have a bit of difficulty getting this through, especially in terms of number of activer contributors and number of contributions. So I guess we should look at those issues first. In the meantime I am trying to intitiate translation at Betawiki, lets see what they have to say about multiple scripts.
SPQRobin , I have a query. Having multiple scritpts has two approcaches 1) Seperate articles for each script( for instance:Wp/kok/Konknni Bhaas and wp/kok/dn/कोंकणी भास are basically the same article written in two different scripts. 2) A single article that can be automatically transliterated on the fly to another script based on the user's request. The two examples that you have given above : Serbian and Khazak wikipedias; Which method do they use? Call for translators to help with the MediaWiki translation[बदल]

We need translators with good knowledge of Konkani to help translate the MediaWiki Interface. MediaWiki is the software on which Wikipedia is run. One of the rquirements to have a Konkani Wikipedia is that the MediaWiki interface should be translated in Konkani. For those who are interested please look at http://translatewiki.net/. You will need to create an account and ask for translator rights for the Konkani Portal.

You do not need to have any programming knowledge to wokr on this project. It is helpful, although not necessary if you know how to work on Wiki sysntax.

Translation will be done in two scripts: Roman And Devanagari. We need translators for both scripts. There is an option to add Kannada later by automatic trasliteration.
